Fracking Not as Popular as We Think?
Hydraulic Fracturing has become a hot topic in today’s news, but according to a recent study performed at The University of Texas at Austin, a startling amount of Americans are unfamiliar with the process.
In this study, 2,400 people were polled regarding how familiar they were with the terms “hydraulic fracturing” and “fracking,” and the results were shocking. “Sixty-three percent of respondents reported they had ‘never heard of’ or were ‘not familiar’ with hydraulic fracturing. Just 32 percent called themselves ‘familiar,’ leaving 5 percent who answered more ambiguously, ‘neither.’”
For those of you that fall into the 63 percent majority, fracking is the process of blasting pressurized chemicals deep into the earth’s surface in order to fracture the rock and release petroleum and natural gas. This procedure is attracting lots of attention because of the harmful impacts it has on our environment and personal health. Ground water contamination, earthquakes, risks to air quality, and mishandling of waste are among the most popular concerns. In fact, several areas have already begun placing a ban on hydraulic fracturing including Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse, Detroit, and the entire state of Vermont.
